Chase Eden, frontman of LA's alt-rock group Give In has always been one for taking chances. Eden tapped into his inner drive accompanied by his heightened ambition and set out to pursue his bigger-than-life love for music. The singer-songwriter went right to Craiglist to get the job done. Shuffling through housing advertisements, community service memos, and chat forums, Eden was able to dodge the serial killers, filter through the cities menaces, and found Give In’s lead guitarist Brian McShea and drummer Jordan Williamson. The two were set to join Chase Eden and his high school friend Sam Laponis on bass. "It’s been a blast being in a band with them", says Eden. "We haven’t had a major fight yet really. I’m not sure if I should be worried about that. Almost as if the longer we don’t have one, the worse it will be. Or maybe, just maybe, you can be in a band and not have large scale arguments that drive everyone to drink". 

Inspired by bands like Fall Out Boy, Blink 182, and Panic! At The Disco, Give In's vibe strips you of the office dress code, and propels you into sharpie-filled nails, pleated skirts, and your favorite Vans. Their music is energetic, their lyrics are an Anger Management exercise in its purest form. Chase Eden's lyrics are un bounding as he describes his feelings and stories in a real, no bull-shit way. The band combines soaring hooks and hard guitar riffs that enhance Eden's confessionals about love, life, and everything in between. Allow me to twist your arm into further listening as you Give In to your newest obsession.

“FINISTA”

We live in a world in a constant battle with ourselves. With eyes glued to shimmering screens, the pressure to prove your existence coupled with the facade of what is real and what is fake is more prominent than ever. Give In has created the perfect song for you to doom scroll through. Enter their hit single "Finista". 

"A Finista is a hidden Instagram account, where a user will only allow a small number of close friends to follow if they allow anyone to follow,” begins Eden. “ Usually, they will post things that they think most people won’t understand. This song is a metaphorical Finsta. It’s an acknowledgment that I don’t trust almost everyone I know enough to think that they will understand". 

Eden's musical influences soar in Finista. Like walking through a million rooms in a stranger’s house, you slowly become familiar and find yourself relating to every nook and cranny. "Recording Finsta took a little doing because of the dynamics,” says the songwriter. “I wanted everything to hit just right —to come in small, then open as large as possible. I think Jim Kaufman (our producer) did a great job on shrinking the right parts, then expanding everything else so it could suck the listener in".

“OVERRATED”

I should warn you, after listening you won’t be able to get "Overrated" out of your head. Your mind will always have the company of Eden's voice declaring "She says I'm overrated”, and you’ll never feel alone again.

"‘Overrated’ is a reflection on a failing relationship", says Eden. "The opposite party made mistakes but is deflecting their own portion of the blame instead of choosing to belittle you. But, you both know that it’s done. You’re just the only one who can admit it at that moment in time."

The hook isn't leaving your head, is it? When it comes to that catchy little vocal riff, Eden admits he didn't really think about it, it just happened. "I think it was originally ever so slightly different, but then Jim asked me to switch a line while I was tracking the lead vocal, just to see what happened, and I came up with what you hear. I’m happy with it though, I’ve had a couple of people say it was stuck in their head and that's a huge compliment".

“COMING HOME”

"We dropped Coming Home in October 2019. It was exciting to release it," Eden shares. "I happened to be in Seattle on the day that it dropped, and when I got off the flight, it was the first time I had positive comments about a song I had done. Not many, mind you, but I’ll take it". Right out of the gate Eden hits you with lyrics that shatter your spirit and put it back together with super glue. 

"No sorry this isn't fair/ But I know you don't really care/ I'm so fucked up I can't feel a thing". When it comes to Eden's favorite lyrics, he solves the riddle of "tell me you’re writing about love without writing about love". "It's a tie between 'I haven’t seen her in days' and 'Is this lovesick?'" says Eden. "I love a good reference to homicide. The latter I like because I was able to put the word 'love' in a song without really putting the word “love” in a song."

“BOOKEND”

"Bookend" is the opening track to Give In's EP "Modern Mirror". The intro, making it the obvious choice to being the opener. "When I heard it all tracked and full, I knew it had to open it all up," shares Eden. "It’s a very “metal” riff, so I think it pays homage to the old bands that I played in as well". Lyrics and gang vocals are an emotive detail to the message behind "Bookend". The lyric, "What else did you fail to mention?" is a punch to the gut as you navigate through your emotions embellished with the heavy guitar riffs. "The song is built on a realizational and frustrated tone about a relationship where infidelity is expected but isn't proven," says Eden. "Overall though, it’s about two people who are unhappy. One of them is stepping out, but both are at the end of their rope". 

From becoming enlightened through the lens of self-reflection to being shattered into pieces from broken relationships. From breaking out of the throes of love and speculation, and coming to terms with the reality you face. Give In is living proof that taking a chance on things isn't always easy but it's worth it every time.
